Newyddion – Gorffenaf 2014 Newsletter July 2014

THANKS – to all those who entertained us at the Noson Lawen in June. There were some great presentations from Fay Hall, Vera Shepherd, Olwen Henley, Delys Griffith, Margaret Hugh, Enid Pryse, Odwyn Jones, and Lun Bevan. Pat Price also distributed an article about Brian Walley, which appeared in the West Australian. Great to have so many contributors, which were enjoyed by all.

VICE PRESIDENT - The Committee is pleased to advise that Enid Pryse has joined the Committee as Vice President. We are sure Enid will help in guiding the Society into the future.

A CHANGE TO OUR 16th JULY PROGRAMME

As our planned speaker is unavailable until October, we have had to rearrange our programme. As a result, on 16th July we will have “Pintirri King of Kunjur” presenting some skilful and entertaining magic tricks, showing how performers amused their audiences before TV and computers overtook our lives. This is great entertainment for all ages, so bring your friends, children and grandchildren to see the marvels of magic!

DAY TRIP

We are planning a trip to Araluen on Sunday 5 October to see the tulips and have a picnic or BBQ. We will make our own way there and will use carpooling, so that those needing a lift can be taken there. Give your names and numbers, and whether you are driving or need a lift, to Bryce,  so that we can work out the best way to get everyone there.

LITERARY COMPETITIONS

SHORT STORY, POETRY and LIMERICK competition entries should be received by Hugh Bevan preferably by the Christmas meeting on 17 December 2014, and by 31 January at the very latest. (email), or by sending to 5 Redfern Close, Hillarys, 6025. Please do not send entries before 18 September as I will be away for periods before then, and I don’t want any to get lost.

The SHORT STORY and POETRY entries may be in Welsh or English and must have some relevance to Wales. The entries must be original work, and the entrant will retain copyright. The Short Story should be between 1000 and 3000 words.

FINISH THE LIMERICK COMPETITIION. Complete the following limerick by adding the fifth line. The fifth line should contain 8 or 9 syllables, and the last word must rhyme with “bay” and “day”. You may enter as many times as you like.

There was a young man of Herne Bay  

Who was making explosives one day.                                                                                                                                

He dropped his cigar                                                                                                                                                                   

In the gunpowder jar

MINCE PIE COMPETITION

At the Christmas meeting on 17 December, we will hold a Mince Pie competition. Prepare 6 Pies on a plate for judging on the night. We know there are a lot of good cooks among us, so don’t be afraid to enter. The proof of the pudding (or Pies) is in the eating!! Men – don’t leave it all to the women!

LEARNING WELSH

At our June meeting we practised how to ask someone if they would like a cup of tea.

“Ydych chi eisiau paned o de?” To which you reply, “Ydw, os gwelwch yn dda” – Yes please. To decline the offer you would say, “Na, dim diolch.” No thanks

LOCAL NEWS

Peter and Margaret Yend have recently returned from visiting the East coast of Australia, including a visit to the Barrier Reef.  We hear that Margaret converted to being a Greenie while on the boat. Ask her about it.

Brian and Mair Walley – We recently heard from Brian. He and Mair are in Margaret River and send their regards. Brian will have turned 92 by the time you read this. Best Wishes to Brian and Mair, from all of us at the Welsh Society in Perth.

NEWS FROM WALES

Follow the fortunes of 28 year old Geraint Thomas in the Tour de France. Geraint, who rides for Team Sky, is from Cardiff. He is a track cycling world champion and won Gold Medals in the team pursuit at both the Beijing and London Olympic Games.

A few days ago, three Black Swans made headlines when they were spotted on the Milford Haven Estuary in Pembrokeshire. Black Swans are rare in Wales! It is believed that they escaped from captive populations in either Devon or Leeds castle. But, as we all know, they are native of WA!
