February 2010 Newsletter

General News

Fay has yet again produced another very interesting and informative newsletter.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

It is good to be back in Perth after my winter holiday in the United Kingdom - the weather there was very cold, as I am sure you have all heard from news reports. The heat here is a real contrast!

As you already know, our St. David's Day Dinner is being held on Monday 1st March and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the day. A flyer has been distributed to
everyone, but a reminder notice is included in this newsletter with details.

I had the privilege of attending a reception hosted by the Lord Mayor of the City of Perth, Ms Lisa Scaffidi, to meet the High Commissioner for Britain, Her Excellency, The Rt. Hon. Baroness Valerie Amos earlier this month. Thanks to Bryce for escorting me, and it was good to see other members of the Welsh Society there.

Congratulations to our friend Joanne Needs (in Singleton), who is also organizing a special St.David's Day Celebration to be held at Henry Sutton Grove, Mandurah on St. David's Day.

Sylvia Williams.
President.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - WEDNESDAY 21st APRIL 2010

Our Annual General Meeting will be held at the South Perth Bowling Club, Wednesday 21st April commencing 7.30pm. Secretary Bryce will circulate nomination forms in March.

MEMBERS' NEWS
Happy Birthday - Karen Corkhill on 13th January and Derek Mayall on 25th January;
Mair Walley on 21st February (she is 86 years young!)
Pat Price is noting special dates for members in a Birthday Book - she would like to know if she has missed anyone's birthday and also any special Anniversaries.

Margaret and Jim Edwards moved to Secret Harbour over twelve months ago, but we keep I touch with them. Extract from their letter reads:-
"It was lovely to receive this (our Christmas Newsletter) and read all the latest news. We have missed the social evenings of the Society, but you never know one night we might surprise you and turn up!"

Odwyn Jones is having further problems with his back and will probably have to undergo a second operation. We all wish you a speedy recovery.

John Roberts had a wonderful family holiday in Queensland, and has come home to recover!

Pat Price tells us that Barbara Hoiler has been in Osborne Park Hospital, and will probably have to go into care. We all miss Barbara and remember those wonderful blankets she made for our raffles and so many other good causes.

Brian and Jean Jenkins (Safety Bay) were in the UK from August to October 2009. They find it difficult to attend our meetings in Perth but will be joining us for the St. David's Day Dinner.

If there is more news about any of our members to be shared, please contact Fay.

U.K. NEWSPAPER CUTTING - Source unknown.

Question: Can you settle an argument about the saying "God Bless the Prince of Wales". Which prince did it originally refer to and when?

Answer: The song "God Bless the Prince of Wales" was written in 1862 to mark the wedding of the future King Edward VII to Alexandra of Denmark the following year. The words were
originally in Welsh, written by John Ceiriog Hughes and the music by Henry Brinley Richards.
The English translation was by George Linley.

Two more interesting extracts from their Newsletter:-

17th Century Parish Record is found

A rare piece of 17th Century church history which was feared lost in Powys has been found - nearly 75 years later. The register from the parish of Llandeilo Graban, near Builth Wells, went missing in 1935, and mysteriously turned up last year in the Midlands. Dating from 1669 to 1812, it was returned to the church but now it has been handed to Powys Council's archives department for safekeeping. The council said it will be placed online for people to view. The log of births, marriages and deaths is in poor condition so it will be digitized before copies are made available for public inspection. It contains information relating to many local families.

Hydro Scheme awarded major prize

A UK scheme to generate power from mountain streams is one of three winners of a one million pounds sterling prize for saving carbon emissions at the local level. The prize is awarded by the lottery-funded body Nesta, which encourages innovation in the UK. The Green Valleys project in Wales' Brecon Beacons currently generates power from 10 wild mountain streams. The eventual aim of the venture is to make the Brecon area a net exporter of electricity. Grenville Ham, who founded Green Valleys, said the Environment Agency imposed strict rules to protect the water level of the streams and ensure that wildlife in the streams was not harmed. National Park rules ensured that the schemes were heavily disguised visually.
