Bus trip to Araluen Gardens

General News

Hello Everyone,

Following conversations with members at the 21 June meeting and at the Lunch at Stringybark Winery Saturday 8 July, we have tentatively booked a 24 seater bus trip to Araluen with "Club 55" for Monday 18 September.  A Monday was the day given to me as being the most favourable day to go on a trip, although this does not fit in with some people's schedule and I apologise to them. Saturdays were also considered but Club 55 did not recommend the weekend as the gardens are very busy due to the large number of people visiting on Saturdays and Sundays during the tulip season. The cost of the trip is also higher on weekends.

Brief details are 9.30am, leave for Araluen Botanical Garden for the annual Tulip Festival. On arrival Morning Tea before free time to explore the gardens and display of tulips and other wildflowers, there is also a train doing circuits of the park for a gold coin donation. This is followed by a 2 course lunch at the 101 Restaurant at the Araluen Country Estate. after lunch wine tasting at Jadran wines, and home by 3.30pm.

The cost is $72 per person for pick up and drop off at (They suggested Dianella Library, saying there is free parking there, but we have to check this out) and at Bull Creek (probably at the RAAF Centre) for those living south of the river. Pick up and drop off times at Bull Creek to be advised later.

The Welsh Society will subsidise part of the cost for Paid up and Life members, who will be asked to pay approximately $40, although the exact figure has not yet been determined by the committee. Non-members will pay $72.

At the Lunch last Saturday 20 people indicated they are willing to do the trip on a Monday, if they all commit to this trip there will be room for an additional 4 people. We need a minimum of 15 people for the trip, and we must confirm the trip with Club 55 by next Wednesday 19 July.

Please send your response to me as soon as possible, but not later than next Tuesday 18 July, either by email or phone (9402 1628) with the number of people and names of those you wish to book for. You are welcome to bring family and friends, but members who have indicated their availability will get first preference, and as stated we need a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 24.

Payment details will be advised at a later date.

Regards to you all,

Hugh

NEWYDDION –Mehefin 2017 NEWSLETTER –June 2017

General News

The June 2017 newsletter can be found here.  It contains very important information about matters decided at the AGM and other coming events.

At our General Meeting held on 17 May 2017, it was unanimously agreed, that due to the falling number of people attending the monthly meetings, and a shortage of officials to run the Society, that The Welsh Society of WA, discontinue to meet on a monthly basis, and instead meet about 4 times a year at different venues and locations. It was also agreed to hold an AGM next year, or at subsequent meetings, to consider the future of the Society. The Society will subsidise the cost of the organised events for paid-up members and life members. Although this signals the end of the Society as we know it, the general feeling of those present was that this was a positive move to address our current needs as it offers numerous possibilities: no night time travelling as events can now be held during the day, weekend activities to include extended family, a variety of venues and location to suit all members. Newsletters will be distributed to advise members of forthcoming events and will continue to be posted on our website.

St David's Day greeting from our President

General News

Greetings to everyone on St. David's Day, as we take pride in our old country on the Day of our Patron Saint.

As you know The Welsh Society of WA held a lunch to commemorate St David at the Mallard Duck Restaurant in the Swan Valley last Saturday, those who attended enjoyed quality food and service in pleasant surroundings, and of course meeting and chatting to other people who hail from, or have some connection to Wales.

On Sunday evening the Anglican St. George's Cathedral held a service with a special emphasis on St. David and Wales, with readings and collects in Welsh, and hymns with a Welsh origin and finishing with the Welsh National Anthem.

The final Literary Competitions were held this year, and as usual we announce the winners on St. David's Day. The winners are :-

LIMERICK COMPETITION -  Winner  "Ty'n Ffynon" (Brian Walley)

There once was a runner named Wright

Who could speed even faster than light.

He set out one day

In a relative way

To prove it he sped out of sight.

POETRY COMPETITION - Winner "In the Beginning" by "Dai Ddynbych" (Brian Walley)

SHORT STORY COMPETITION - Winner "Cymraeg" by "Sais" (Brian Walley)

Congratulation to Brian Walley for winning all three categories in 2017, the engraved shields will be with him very soon.

Our best wishes go to Pat Price, recently taken to Joondalup Hospital after a fall, we wish her a speedy recovery.

Greetings and best wishes have recently been received from Myra Olsson, Moira McLaren, and Margaret Edwards, and we pass them on to all our members. Although unable to attend our meetings, we are in their thoughts and they are remembered in high esteem and fondness by the Society.

Best Regards
Hugh Bevan
