Vale Diana Thompson

General News

I am sorry to be the bearer of sad news but Diana passed away January 15th. I mentioned in the last newsletter that she had stopped receiving treatment for cancer and  when I visited her in  early December she told me that she was “Ready to go.” This did not really surprise me because Diana always  maintained a philosophical outlook on life. She certainly packed a great deal into the 77 years she was with us and was a valuable contributor to the Welsh Society over many years.

Diana’s funeral service will  be held next Friday, January 23rd at 10.30 am at Grace Church, 109 Grand Boulevard, Joondalup. (On the corner of Shenton  Avenue and Grand Boulevard.)

Fondest regards,

Eluned

General News

THANKS – to all those who entertained us at the Noson Lawen in June. There were some great presentations from Fay Hall, Vera Shepherd, Olwen Henley, Delys Griffith, Margaret Hugh, Enid Pryse, Odwyn Jones, and Lun Bevan. Pat Price also distributed an article about Brian Walley, which appeared in the West Australian. Great to have so many contributors, which were enjoyed by all.

VICE PRESIDENT - The Committee is pleased to advise that Enid Pryse has joined the Committee as Vice President. We are sure Enid will help in guiding the Society into the future.

A CHANGE TO OUR 16th JULY PROGRAMME

As our planned speaker is unavailable until October, we have had to rearrange our programme. As a result, on 16th July we will have “Pintirri King of Kunjur” presenting some skilful and entertaining magic tricks, showing how performers amused their audiences before TV and computers overtook our lives. This is great entertainment for all ages, so bring your friends, children and grandchildren to see the marvels of magic!

DAY TRIP

We are planning a trip to Araluen on Sunday 5 October to see the tulips and have a picnic or BBQ. We will make our own way there and will use carpooling, so that those needing a lift can be taken there. Give your names and numbers, and whether you are driving or need a lift, to Bryce,  so that we can work out the best way to get everyone there.

LITERARY COMPETITIONS

SHORT STORY, POETRY and LIMERICK competition entries should be received by Hugh Bevan preferably by the Christmas meeting on 17 December 2014, and by 31 January at the very latest. (email), or by sending to 5 Redfern Close, Hillarys, 6025. Please do not send entries before 18 September as I will be away for periods before then, and I don’t want any to get lost.

The SHORT STORY and POETRY entries may be in Welsh or English and must have some relevance to Wales. The entries must be original work, and the entrant will retain copyright. The Short Story should be between 1000 and 3000 words.

FINISH THE LIMERICK COMPETITIION. Complete the following limerick by adding the fifth line. The fifth line should contain 8 or 9 syllables, and the last word must rhyme with “bay” and “day”. You may enter as many times as you like.

MINCE PIE COMPETITION

At the Christmas meeting on 17 December, we will hold a Mince Pie competition. Prepare 6 Pies on a plate for judging on the night. We know there are a lot of good cooks among us, so don’t be afraid to enter. The proof of the pudding (or Pies) is in the eating!! Men – don’t leave it all to the women!

LEARNING WELSH

At our June meeting we practised how to ask someone if they would like a cup of tea.

“Ydych chi eisiau paned o de?” To which you reply, “Ydw, os gwelwch yn dda” – Yes please. To decline the offer you would say, “Na, dim diolch.” No thanks

Now for some more greetings.

How are you?  Shwd ‘ych chi? (South Wales) Sut’dach chi? (North Wales)

Good bye Pob hwyl,   hwyl,    da bo chi.  Good health!   iechyd da!   Come in   dewch i mewn.

NEWS FROM WALES

Follow the fortunes of 28 year old Geraint Thomas in the Tour de France. Geraint, who rides for Team Sky, is from Cardiff. He is a track cycling world champion and won Gold Medals in the team pursuit at both the Beijing and London Olympic Games.

A few days ago, three Black Swans made headlines when they were spotted on the Milford Haven Estuary in Pembrokeshire. Black Swans are rare in Wales! It is believed that they escaped from captive populations in either Devon or Leeds castle. But, as we all know, they are native of WA!

May 2014 Newsletter

General News

Dear Members,

The AGM was held on Wednesday, April 16th in the hall of The Noranda Uniting Church, 79 Camboon Road, Noranda.  The new Committee is:

President: Hugh Bevan                                   Vice President:

Secretary: Bryce Henley                                 Treasurer: Barbara Fowler

Committee: Olwen Henley                               Committee: Delys Griffiths

Committee: Eluned Bevan (Newsletter and Enfys correspondent)

Pat Price was elected Vice President but has since resigned from the Committee. Nominations are now sought for the position of Vice President, to be elected at our next Society meeting on 21st May, 2014.

The committee would like to thank Pat and Terry Price for their work on the committee over a number of years, and Pat in particular, for her service as President in recent years.

At the AGM, members voted to hold future meetings in the Hall of the Noranda Uniting Church on the third Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm. Hopefully this return to Wednesday evening meetings will enable those who have other commitments on Monday nights, to attend. Members who were present at the AGM agreed that it was a pleasant venue – considerably larger than previous venues, with no need to share with other groups, allowing for greater flexibility in our choice of activities. We hope that having a more suitable venue to hold our meetings will bring more stability to the Society and encourage members to attend regularly.  Hugh Bevan

Daytime Outings/Activities

During the course of the coming year, the committee hopes to organise a few daytime outings or activities. Hopefully, this will help us keep in touch with our members who are unable to attend our monthly evenings and perhaps encourage family members and friends to attend. This is not a new concept for the Society – we can all recall the TAFE lunches and bus trips! If you have ideas of where to visit etc. let us know at the May meeting.

Noson Lawen 18th June

We are looking for members who are willing to provide an item (or two) for our Noson Lawen. Items can take on any form – including singing, reciting, reading story/poetry, dancing, skits, jokes, etc. which have a touch of Welsh flavour. So please give this some thought so that we can share in an enjoyable evening!

Learning to speak Welsh??

A few people have indicated that they would like to learn to speak Welsh, so each newsletter will include some frequently used words/phrases for you to practise at home. We will need a few Welsh speaking mentors to be on hand for the learners to practise during the first five minutes of our meetings. The idea is that we make learning enjoyable, informal and part of our Society. I shall discuss this further at our May meeting. In the meantime, here are some greetings for you to have a go at:

Bore da – good morning    prynhawn da – good afternoon     noswaith dda – good evening Nos da – good night      os gwelwch yn dda – please       diolch – thankyou   ia/ie- yes

For those with access to the internet, there are numerous free websites offering Welsh lessons. One good one is: Learn Welsh for free – surface languages. It offers audio as well as visual.  Lun B

Congratulation to the following Literary Winners

The Limerick -Diana Thompson      Poetry - Odwyn Jones for his poem “Jerusalem”

Short story - Brian Walley for his story “From Wales to Australia”

These were read out at our April meeting.

Time for a laugh to keep us young!

A friend hosted a dinner party for friends and their children. During dinner, my friend’s four year old daughter, sitting opposite me, stared at me continuously. She could barely eat her food for staring. I checked my blouse for spots, felt my face for food, patted my hair in place but nothing stopped her from staring at me. I tried hard to ignore her but finally it was too much for me. I finally asked,

“Why are you staring at me?” The table went quiet waiting for her response. The little girl said,

“I’m just waiting to see how you drink like a fish!”     (Be careful what you say in front of children)
